I will certainly be watching for Spring! Please be sure your child is dressed for the weather of the day. Also, please remind your child to wear tennis shoes on Tuesdays and Fridays. We have a new gym floor and we want kids to be safe.

WHAT'S HAPPENING IN MARCH?

Please watch for the rescheduling of Math Night at Publix. 

Our class will enjoy some fun activities in the Media Center with Mrs. McCoy on Wednesday from 10:45 until 11:45. Thanks to all of our parents who will be volunteering to help.

Daylight Savings Time begins Sunday, March 8 at 2:00 am so, set your clocks ahead one hour Saturday night. Don't be late to school Monday morning!

Wright Environmental Center, Thursday, March 12.
Please send your child in tennis shoes as our field trip will include a hike through the woods. Permission forms and donations are due March 4. If your child is bringing a lunch from home, please make sure that everything is disposable or your child may purchase a lunch from school to take on the field trip. Students always enjoy this trip!

Febrrrrrrrrrrrrrrruary!

AND NOT A SNOWMAN TO BE FOUND! WE HAVE HAD SOME WACKY WEATHER THIS WINTER AND I AM READY FOR EITHER SOME REAL SNOW OR SPRING!

I have been showered with love and appreciation during the past two weeks! Thank you so much for all the sweet Valentine's Day chocolates and cards. Then you all made me feel super special during Teacher Appreciation Week. First, the county gave us two days off to celebrate :) then the kids came in with such beautiful flowers, delicious snacks, and special treats! Most heart-warming were the kind words from parents and the notes and cards written by your children. I thank you all from the bottom of my heart.  All the teachers enjoyed the Mardi Gras themed luncheon --- a very special thank you goes to Mrs, Brown, our room mother, who took care of the decorations and paper goods with your donations. 

ADDISON MATH NIGHT AT PUBLIX is this Thursday from 5:00 until 7:00. I will be there from 5:30 until 6:00 but you can come anytime to have fun with Math! You will sign in at the table that will be set up in the lobby, pick up your scavenger hunt, and return the completed sheet to the table for a special surprise! I hope you all will come!

We're Over the Moon!

WE HAD A GREAT WEEK AND ARE JUST OVER THE MOON ABOUT ALL WE DID AND LEARNED!

 OUR SPACE DAY ROTATION TO EACH FOURTH GRADE TEACHER AND TO THE SCIENCE LAB WAS AWESOME! THE STAR LAB WAS A COUPLE OF DAYS LATE ARRIVING AT ADDISON SO WE HAD TO MAKE SOME ADJUSTMENTS BUT IT WORKED OUT SO THAT WE WERE ABLE TO ENJOY AN EXTRA VISIT TO THE SCIENCE LAB. WE ARE FORTUNATE IN COBB COUNTY TO HAVE ACCESS TO THE TRAVELING PLANETARIUM. IT TRULY ENHANCES OUR CURRICULUM. AS ALWAYS, WE WERE THANKFUL THAT OUR VOLUNTEERS WERE FLEXIBLE AND GAVE THEIR TIME SO GENEROUSLY. MRS. BROWN, MRS. HERNANDEZ, AND MRS. MCDONALD WERE THERE FOR US!

ON THURSDAY, WE LEARNED A WHOLE LOT ABOUT BEING AN ENTREPRENEUR IN OUR JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT LESSONS WITH MRS. COONEY. SHE PRESENTED  A VARIETY OF ACTIVITIES DESIGNED TO TEACH US ABOUT EXPENSES AND REVENUE, PROFIT AND LOSSES,  NATURAL, CAPITAL, AND HUMAN RESOURCES, AND THE TRAITS IT TAKES TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN BUSINESS. A BIG THANK YOU GOES TO MRS. COONEY FOR SPENDING THE ENTIRE DAY WITH US!

FIRST FEBRUARY FLASH!

Will we have six more weeks of this wacky winter? Or is Spring peeking just around the corner?

Next week will be a little different than most. On Wednesday, fourth grade students will enjoy a full day of rotating into each fourth grade classroom and learning from the teacher who lives there!  We have some great activities planned to support our Science studies of the solar system, stars, constellations, and planets. Each class will also visit the Star Lab which will totally fill the Science Lab. Students will be amazed by a virtual night sky!

     On Thursday, all Addison students will get a full day of economic lessons presented by Junior Achievement volunteers (which will include some Sprayberry High School cadets). We look forward to having Mrs. Cooney in our classroom and are so appreciative that she volunteered to coordinate this day for Addison. 

We will continue to work with fractions and mixed numbers. Study those X Facts!

America has certainly changed a lot since Colonial times! We are learning all about life in the early years of our nation. We have read two great novels by author Clyde Robert Bulla: A Lion to Guard Us and Charlie's House and have been able to better understand the hardships endured by so many of the people who first came to America. We will continue to learn more about the differences among the three regions: New England, Mid-Atlantic (Middle) Colonies, and the Southern Colonies.

Each student will be hard at work to produce his or her best writing piece ever! Why? Because Addison's Writing Fair winner will compete at the county level! And who knows, someone from our class could win the State Writing Fair! We want to hook our readers with a story they just can't put down! We all love to talk to tell stories, now let's do our best to put our favorite stories in writing!

On Friday, February 13, we will exchange valentines with one another. I will be sending home a list of students' names in our class. They are all such sweeties!

Jogging Through January!

We are so proud of Aadi! He represented Addison at the Cobb County district wide Spelling Bee last Saturday. It was a long day with about 80 students from fourth grade through eighth grade from across the county. Aadi finished near the top! We know that it took hard work to prepare for the competition and we appreciate his dedication and the support of his family. Congratulations on a job well done,  Aadi!

Fractions are keeping us very busy in Math! We have learned about equivalent fractions and reducing fractions to simplest terms. We are realizing how very important mastery of the basic multiplication facts can be to our success when we are looking for the greatest common factor or the least common multiple! Soon we will work with mixed numbers and will add, subtract, and multiply fractions.

How did our country begin? As thirteen English colonies! We are learning how the climate and geography determined the economy of each region. We will compare and contrast life in the three regions. We will also learn about life in Colonial America as experienced by women, artisans, indentured servants, slaves, large landowners, farmers, and Native Americans.

This week in Science, we will review the properties of light and sound. We will test our knowledge and understanding.

All of this week's words have a "g" either at the beginning or in the final sound. Some are tricky and some are unfamiliar so students need to study the definitions as well as the spelling patterns. Spelling City has much to offer to help prepare for Friday's test.

Quite some time ago, students were given information so they can access online test practice for the Milestones test that will be given in April. Usernames and passwords were placed on the front page of every agenda. Please encourage your child to practice so they will know what to expect when test time comes. CONGRATULATIONS, AADI! 

Last Friday, Mira and Aadi represented our classroom in the school Spelling Bee. We are so proud of them both. Aadi kept us on the edges of our seats as he won in the final round of competition with other fourth and fifth graders. Soon, he will go to the county as Addison's winner to compete. We all wish Aadi             Good Luck!

EVERYBODY LOVES FRACTIONS! 

We are reviewing factors and multiples in preparation for understanding equivalent fractions and comparing fractions. We will then add and subtract like and unlike fractions and mixed numbers. Those multiplication and division facts play a very important role in success with fractions.

Every student should continue to practice regularly!

In Social Studies, we are finding out what it took to build a colony in American in 1607. Jamestown was America's first permanent English colony. We will learn how the English went on to colonize the eastern seaboard and develop the original thirteen colonies. We will focus on the how the differing environments influenced the economy of each region.

            
In Science, we are learning about light and sound. We are discovering how each type of energy travels through matter. Last Friday in the Science Lab, we conducted experiments to demonstrate refraction and reflection. We also identified opaque, transparent, and translucent materials. We appreciated Mrs. Brown volunteering in the Science Lab to help us.
